Scope and Contents
The Collection consists of documents produced and collected by the Office of the Provost and Provost Darryl Tippens, at Pepperdine University between 1974 and 2015. It is made up of alphabetically arranged subject files relating to many functions and interactions that went through the Provost's Office during Darryl Tippens time at Pepperdine. Documents cover a wide range of topics including, accreditation; faculty; LGBTQIA+ rights; internation studies programs; renovations; finances; policies and plans; student organizations; conferences; committees and day-to-day administrative issues related to organizational structure, tenure, budget, and events. The most common document in this collection is correspondence about any of these topics.
Within this collection, there are large groups of folders about, the Board of Regents, the Christian Scholars Conference, new faculty orientation, Glazer Institute for Jewish Studies, Graduate School of Education and Psychology, Graziadio School of Business and Management, International Programs, media, School of Law, School of Public Policy, Seaver College, strategic plans, tenure, and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
The collection also includes a couple of documents that speak about as early as the 1930's and as late as plans for 2020.
Additionally, many documents within the folders do not directly involve Darryl Tippens, but other activities, correspondence, and happenings relating to Pepperdine University.

Advance notice required for access. There are files that contain confidential information, and therefore access is restricted for 25 years from date of creation. The whole collection will be open in 2040.

Biographical Note
Darryl Tippens received his bachelor of arts at Oklahoma Christian College in 1968, his Master of Arts and Ph.D. in English from Louisiana State University in 1971 and 1973 respectively.
Tippens taught at Oklahoma Christian University from 1972-1987, at Abilene Christian University from 1987-2000, and became the Provost of Pepperdine University in 2001, while also teaching Early Modern Literature. Additionally, at Oklahoma Christian University, he served as the Chair of Language and Literature and at Abilene Christian University he was named the James. W. Culp Distinguished Professor of English.
While at Pepperdine, he is known for hiring new faculty and keeping the students and faculty centered in his approach to administration.
He retired from Pepperdine in 2014 and returned to Abilene Christian University, where he currently resides as an advisor to the administration and the first appointed University Distinguished Scholar of Faith, Learning and Literature.
Through his life he has served congregations in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas as an associate minister, youth minister and elder.
His published works include, “The Gospel According to Generation X,” “Pilgrim Heart,” and “That's Why We Sing: Reclaiming the Wonder of Congregational Singing.” He has also edited and contributed to many other publications. He was on the editorial boards of two periodicals, New Wineskins and Explorations in Renaissance Culture. His main focus of his research was on literature, film, Christianity, and contemporary culture. He bases his work on discovering truths, the pursuit of knowledge not only for academic purposes, but for spiritual as well.

Abstract
The collection contains subject files kept by the Office of the Provost, during Darryl Tippens residency as Provost. Though Tippens was only Provost from 2001 to 2014, records date from 1975-2015. The types of material include correspondence, reports, manuals, administrative documents, plans for events and large projects, and general documents about or related to activity at Pepperdine University.
Arrangement
The records are arranged in alphabetical order by folder title.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The collection was transferred to Special Collections in May 2019 from the provost's office during the presidential transition.
Processing Information Note
The collection was arranged and described by Nikki Kline, Special Collections and University Archives Intern, under the supervision of Kelsey Knox in Fall of 2021.
