Scope and Content
The collection includes files collected from James I. Penrod's office between 1970 and 1985 during his time as Vice President for Systems and Planning at Pepperdine University. Materials include correspondence (from Howard A. White and others); organization charts; a systems and planning orientation manual; papers from Pepperdine management conferences; memos; meeting minutes, correspondence, and other items from committees Penrod was a member of; and an article by Penrod in a 1983 issue of the EDUCOM Bulletin titled "Information Technology Literacy: Initiatives at Pepperdine University."
Committees include the Systems and Planning Committee (SP), Data Administration Group (DAG), Interoffice Coordination Committee, Academic Computing Advisory Committee (ACAC), Malibu Space Committee, Faculty/Staff Traffic Judiciary Committee, University Academic Council, Operations Planning Committee, Payroll/Personnel Advisory Committee, Business Systems Advisory Committee, Administrative Records Advisory Committee (ARAC), "D.P." (possibly degree progress or database-related), "ASRC," Administrative Records Task Group, and the Student Systems Advisory Committee.

Biographical note
James I. Penrod has over 44 years of experience in higher education as an administrator and professor. Most recently he served as professor emeritus in Higher and Adult Education Leadership in the College of Education at the University of Memphis, before retiring in May, 2010. From 2003 to 2006, he was an ATT Fellow in the Advanced Learning Center, Fedex Institute of Technology at the University of Memphis, and a Senior Fellow in the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research, Boulder, Colorado. He holds a doctorate in Institutional Management from Pepperdine University, a master's degree in Biostatistics from Tulane University, and bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Harding University. He was one of the first dozen Chief Information Officers to be appointed in an institution of higher education, and served as the founding Chief Information Officer at four universities: Pepperdine University, the University of Maryland at Baltimore, California State University Los Angeles, and the University of Memphis. He was active in professional organizations such as CAUSE, EDUCOM, EDUCAUSE, SIM, AAHE, and AIR for many years, serving on a variety of national and regional boards and committees. Additionally, he has been active in his community and church. He is the author of sixty-nine publications and gave over 100 national and international presentations. Penrod also served as a consultant for approximately 30 colleges and universities over the last 30 years of his career. He currently lives near Little Rock, Arkansas and is a volunteer for the state of Arkansas AARP.
