Biographical / Historical
Tarot cards likely originated in northern Italy during the late 14th or early 15th century. These cards are likely not that old, but do come from Florence in northern Italy. It was first developed as a card game then used for divinatory practices by the 18th century. The earliest tarot cards were hand-painted, but the backs of these cards are all identical so it is inferred that these were produced during the time when mass printing was available, but not yet in multiple colors.
