Scope and Content

From the Series:

The purpose of this book, published in 2012, and co-authored by Joel Fetzer and J. Christopher Soper, is to integrate the philosophical and political ideologies of Confucianism and Democracy and to explain that it is possible for them to coexist in the political sphere of Asian countries such as Taiwan. Through a discussion on the protection of women, indigenous peoples and free press, and through the study of public opinion polls, surveys, debates and interviews, this book concludes that the teachings of Confucius is compatible with a liberal democracy, making the shift to a Democratic political system possible in other Confucian countries. The series contains research materials accumulated while writing the book including notes and CDs from interviews conducted in Taiwan, as well as business cards, copyright letters, notes, and the interview schedule. Materials are in English, Mandarin, or Taiwanese.
